"A clean tooth is rarely sick." – Old German proverb
Why preventative care??
A professional dental cleaning, known as prophylaxis in industry terms, is the basis for maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. Regular cleanings not only improve your oral health, but they also increase your quality of life, attractiveness and vitality. The risk of a heart attack or stroke is reduced by the regular removal of plaque and a reduction of bacteria in the oral cavity. Tooth decay and periodontal diseases are also prevented.
What is a professional dental cleaning?
Prophylaxis is a professional cleaning in which all hard and soft plaque, as well discoloration (due to nicotine, coffee, tea, red wine) is gently removed from by a qualified dental hygienist with ultrasound, curettes and an air polishing device (Airflow). This is followed by a thorough cleaning between the teeth with dental floss and interdental brushes. The final polishing of tooth surfaces, as well an intense tongue cleaning gives you a pleasant feeling of freshness. Finally, the teeth are coated with a fluoride varnish, in order to protect them from acid and bacteria. You will receive advice that is individually tailored to your needs for optimal oral hygiene at home.
Periodontitis is a bacterial inflammation of the gums, which results in the loss of bone and supporting tissue around the tooth. This leads to the loosening and eventual loss of teeth. Dental plaque provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. This is a risk factor for coronary heart disease, stroke and premature labor. A significantly increased susceptibility to periodontal infection is associated with a decreased response to bacterial colonization. This can be caused by a weak immune system, smoking, stress, poorly controlled diabetes or poor oral hygiene, among others. There is also an aggressive genetic form of periodontal disease. In general, when there is no plaque, there is no food to feed the bacteria.Symptoms :
- Red or swollen gums
- Sensitive teeth
- Bleeding gums
- Gingival pockets
- Halitosis (bad breath)
- Loosening of teeth
Even after the therapy, a regular follow-up is necessary, which also includes a semi-annual dental cleaning.
Night-time teeth grinding can be the cause of tension in the jaw and neck area, jaw joint problems, cervical wedge-shaped defects, tinnitus and toothaches. The long and intense grinding leads to a considerable loss of substance of the teeth and damage to dentures. A plastic made grinding-adapted night guard relaxes the muscles and protects the teeth. Sport Mouth Guards Do you or your kids play sports? For many sports (boxing, judo, hockey, etc), it is very important to wear a custom-made mouth guard. Without a proper fitting mouth guard, injury to the jaw joint, tongue and lips, including the loss of teeth is inevitable. The role of the mouth guard is to distribute the force evenly and thus prevent damage. A pre-made mouth guard from a sport shop does not sufficiently protect you from injury. Please contact us if you are interested. We will happily guide you on choosing the right guard for especially for you.
Unfortunately, the misconception is widespread that baby teeth are not very important. The truth is that healthy baby teeth are an important prerequisite for the growth of the jaw, development of the permanent dentition, food intake and even your child's language development. They also serve as placeholders for the permanent teeth. Therefore, regular monitoring from the first tooth makes sense. Between 6 and 17 years, a semi-annual individual prophylaxis is necessary. There, your child's teeth are cleaned, fluoridated, and possibly sealed. We even practice proper brushing techniques with your child. These are the best measures to prevent tooth decay. The costs are covered by the insurance company every six months.
The following filling materials are used in our practice:
- Mercury-containing material
- Easy to apply and set
- Mechanical retentions are used, sacrificing more tooth structure
- High durability
- Insurance covers the posterior teeth
- Tooth-colored forming material
- Chemical bond with tooth structure, more suitable for larger defects than with amalgam
- High durability
- Self-pay for the posterior teeth
For larger carious defects, sometimes a filling with amalgam or composite is no longer sufficient, since there is little stability of the tooth. In this case, inlays or partial crowns are the proper choice in order to preserve the permanence of the tooth and to allow for proper chewing force again. You can choose between a gold, base metal or ceramic restorations.
For optimum dentures, a good interaction between the dentist, dental technician and patient is important. A denture is necessary in the loss of one or more teeth in order to ensure stability of the dentition and prevent TMJ problems due to teeth angling into the gap. Different care options are available:
- Adhesive bridge on the incisors (without grinding the adjacent teeth)
- Implant with crown
- Dentures with braces or invisible retainers (Telescopes)
Throughout life, nicotine and dyes from foods such as coffee, tea, and red wine can settle on the teeth. Even though this can be partially removed by a professional dental cleaning, often times the discoloration has already penetrated deeper into the tooth causing your teeth to look darker. They can be brightened up by a so-called "bleaching". At our dental practice, we offer a gentle "home bleaching" method, where a bleaching gel is placed in a custom-made, thin, transparent tray. This is worn overnight for a period of 3-5 days. We also offer you the opportunity to lighten individual teeth that have become darker after a root canal. This process is called internal bleaching. In this case, the whitening material is introduced inside the tooth at the top of the root canal, where it lingers for 3 days before it is removed from your dentist.
Our practice performs minor surgical procedures. These include the removal of “hopeless” teeth and root fragments, as well as the removal of wisdom teeth and root end surgery.
Our practice is equipped with digital x-ray machines to single image and radiograph (OPG), as well as 3D photographs. The advantages of using digital radiography include a significantly lower radiation exposure as well as the opportunity to evaluate, edit and send the pictures immediately.
